A Terracotta House Christmas in the Tropics

This year being the first for Terracotta House I wanted to share with you how we celebrate Christmas in the tropics. It’s basically anything other than an idyllic snowy white Christmas. Instead it’s a coconut palm tree, color filled - green one. The weather is warm, the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming. Growing up in the southern Florida I dreamed of the classic snow filled holidays with chestnuts roasting on open fires and freezing temps that put you in a cozy state of mind. I craved seasons and despised this tropical landscape. I moved up north straight out of high school, but always found myself back in Florida for the holidays. So, let’s just say I have come to embrace a tropical Christmas.

This year I have been inspired by pale and coral pinks, vibrant orange and rich burnt red. These colors that keep re-occurring in my work- where a perfect color palette for a colorful holiday. I wanted to merge abstract paint strokes with vibrant florals and I am thrilled with how it turned out. I wanted to be as true to Florida as possible and built out the tree with silk flowers that are commonly found in this region - poppies, peonies and garden roses. I foraged and dried fish tail, cabbage and robellini palms and used them for the wreaths, garland and general decor. I have always been a sucker for dried palm fronds. I also used the left over cut cabbage palm ends as a natural tree skirt.

Hope you enjoy how we spend the holidays here in Delray Beach — and check out our gift boxes + stocking stuffers we have featured below.

Happy Christmas !

xoxo

Valerie
